Apple Watch Series 4 ECG Limited By Region, But Use Can Be Enabled Outside U.S.A.

Apple Watch Series 4 ECG limited by region, but use can be enabled outside U.S.A.

The Apple Watch Series 4 and later models have a built-in feature that allows users to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) with the ECG app. An ECG is a test that records the electrical signals that make the heart beat and can help detect irregular heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation (AFib). The ECG app on the Apple Watch Series 4 and later models works by using an electrical heart sensor that measures the electrical pulses from the user's finger on the Digital Crown and the back of the watch.

However, the ECG app is not available in all regions, as it requires regulatory approval from each country's health authorities. As of September 2023, the ECG app is available in over 60 countries and regions, but not in some major markets such as China, India, Japan, and South Korea. Users who live in these regions or travel to these regions may not be able to use the ECG app on their Apple Watch Series 4 and later models.

Fortunately, there is a workaround that can enable the ECG app outside the U.S.A. and other supported regions. The trick is to change the region setting on the iPhone that is paired with the Apple Watch to one of the supported regions, such as the U.S.A., Canada, or the U.K.. This will activate the ECG app on the Apple Watch and allow users to take an ECG wherever they are. However, there are some drawbacks to this method, such as losing access to some local features and services, and potentially violating Apple's terms of service. Therefore, users should exercise caution and discretion when using this workaround.

To change the region setting on the iPhone, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app on the iPhone.

  • Tap General, then tap Language & Region.

  • Tap Region and select one of the supported regions for the ECG app.

  • Confirm the change and wait for the iPhone to restart.

  • Open the Health app on the iPhone and follow the onscreen steps to set up the ECG app.

  • Open the ECG app on the Apple Watch and take an ECG.

Note that changing the region setting may affect other features and apps on the iPhone and Apple Watch, such as Siri, Maps, News, Weather, Calendar, and more. Users may need to adjust their settings accordingly or switch back to their original region when they are done using the ECG app. Users should also be aware that using the ECG app outside of its intended regions may not be accurate or reliable, and should not replace professional medical advice or diagnosis. The ECG app is not intended for use by people under 22 years old.

The Apple Watch Series 4 and later models offer a unique feature that can help users monitor their heart health with an ECG. However, this feature is limited by regional restrictions that prevent users from accessing it in some countries. By changing the region setting on their iPhone, users can enable the ECG app outside of its supported regions, but they should be careful of the potential risks and consequences of doing so.
